Actor and performer.Screen, stage, museum.

In short

Jasper Engelhardt is an actor trained in Zurich who has spent a decade moving between three rooms that rarely share their people: German-language film and television, the repertory stage, and the museum.

He led a Polizeiruf 110 for Jan Bonny, played Kafka and Bernhard in Vienna, and performed Marina Abramović's Imponderabilia at Kunsthaus Zürich. Today he lives in New York, completing an MFA at The New School, assisting the curator Klaus Biesenbach, and making his own work. The common thread is one discipline: presence, held exactly as long as the work asks.

Own work

Work that starts from research and from machines: a family archive, recorded conversations, small computers and language models that read the room. Made for the black box, the page and the classroom.

AI-automated performance · 2026, in development

Infinite Jest

A performance about making the performer obsolete. After David Foster Wallace's novel, whose film is so entertaining that no one can look away, a machine takes over the show: a 2009 Nokia N900 becomes a haptic controller for up to eight channels of video projection, while a Raspberry Pi 5 on stage listens, reacts and re-cues the projections in real time, working with large language models. The system reads the room, the day and the audience, so no two performances are alike. Developed in David Carroll's course Small Linux Devices, Large Language Models at Parsons School of Design, in open collaboration with AI.

Solo performance · The New School, April 2026

Berghein

A solo with live projection: the Furka Pass on film, a grandfather's front-line letters from the Second World War, archive documents, and the news of present wars. Built from the same archive as Never Again. Next Time. Shown in Solo Together, 151 Bank Street, New York, 17 and 18 April 2026.

Readings · GRIMMWELT Kassel, 2026 – 2027

Reading Helga

For Reshaping Tales | Helga Gebert (Zwischen Gestalten), the first comprehensive solo exhibition of his grandmother's work, he recorded the stories for the reading corner of GRIMMWELT Kassel: Grimm tales in their 1857 versions, from Aschenputtel to Frau Holle, and Helga Gebert's own retellings, from Die Seejungfrau to Igel und Maus. Visitors can listen to them in the museum until 11 April 2027.
